#22 What is Green Marketing?

About.com says Green marketing is the process of selling products and/or services based on their environmental benefits. Such a product or service may be environmentally friendly in itself or produced and/or packaged in an environmentally friendly way.

The obvious assumption of green marketing is that potential consumers will view a product or service's "greenness" as a benefit and base their buying decision accordingly. The not-so-obvious assumption of green marketing is that consumers will be willing to pay more for green products than they would for a less-green comparable alternative product - an assumption that has not been proven conclusively

W6W: Some marketers avoid "Going Green" because it's perceived to be more expensive. Short term it may be, but long term it will pay off in dividends. Some marketers are worried about people thinking they are just jumping on the bandwagon. Well, it's a good bandwagon to be on. If you are worried about a Green Backlash, you don't have to say you are 100% Green, just be honest and let them know you are taking steps to changes things where you can. Check out some of the latest Green efforts.

So I am commenting on my own blog, which is weird. But, I forgot two things for companies who do billing:

1. If I have autopay and you deduct my bill from the bank. Send me an email. Don't send me a letter saying this is not a bill. Your company probably could save $0.50 (paper, envelope, stamp, time) per month x 12 months x 100,000 customers.

2. If you do send me a letter, don't use the envelopes with the plastic windows. Those are less friendly for recycling.
